Two Bulgarian Medals on Display at British Museum

Every visitor to the British Museum in London can see on display two medals, molded by the Bulgarian master Teodosii Antonov, born in the town of Montana, 150 kilometers north of Sofia.

Before the start of the democratic changes in Bulgaria medals were considered to make events memorable and the artist never ran short of orders. After 1989 he focused his efforts on the so-called artistic medals, which are created for art's sake only. These are the medals that took him to the British Museum in London. Out of 650 exhibits on display at the exhibition, the British Museum selected the two Bulgarian medals to purchase.

There are only three persons in Bulgaria who are recognized as masters in molding medals. They inherit the legacy of the Italian Antonio Pisanello, who brought to life the first medal in the world six centuries ago, by casting in a mould the image of his owner on a round piece of bronze.

Right after that people were quick to realize that medals are an easy way to secure recognition and immortality.
