Poland Votes in EU Entry Referendum

Poland voted Saturday in a referendum to decide whether to join the European Union. Opinion polls suggest most Poles back EU membership, but voter turnout could be crucial. If less than half the electorate casts their votes, the referendum will be invalid and parliament will decide the issue. President Alexander Kwasniewski and Polish-born Pope John Paul II have both backed EU membership. BBC cited latest polls as suggesting that two-thirds of voters will cast a ballot and at least two-thirds will support EU membership.
