Powerful Earthquake Struck Japan

A strong earthquake has hit northern Japan, shaking buildings and sending people running into the streets in panic. It struck in the early evening, close to the northern city of Sendai. The magnitude seven earthquake was powerful enough to shake buildings in Tokyo, more than 300 kilometres away. There were no reports of serious damage, and buildings appear to have stood up well. The Shinkansen bullet train service to the region has been suspended, and some roads have been closed for checks.
