The death toll in Algeria reached nearly 1,500, on Friday with more than 7,000 injured by the quake that struck Wednesday at the evening dinner hour, measuring as much as 6.8 on the Richter scale on some monitors.The Muslim Sabbath Friday coincided with the start of an official three days of mourning, providing a vessel for Algerians' grief at the same time as desperate rescue and recovery work wore into a second day. Aid poured into the North African country from around the world as the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies appealed for $1.5 million to provide food, blankets and medicine for survivors.
