The consultations between Bulgarian Chief Negotiator Meglena Kuneva with the EU and representatives of the European Commission finished late on September 25. The focus was on the annual report on Bulgaria`s progress in its preparation for accession to the EU. The EC will release the report in November. `We presented information on the work that has been done in the past three months,` Kuneva said. She met Enlargement Directorate Director-General Eneko Landaburu, the EC negotiator with Bulgaria Michael Leigh and the other experts, involved in the accession talks with Bulgaria. `It is important for us to preserve the administrative capacity for work so that the pace of accession talks can be maintained and accelerated,` Kuneva said. She did not commit a concrete answer to the question whether the Bulgarian side is rethinking the accession deadline it has set for itself. `I think this is an issue that should be debated within the Cabinet and the opinions of a number of experts should be taken into consideration,` she said. Kuneva noted that Bulgaria at the moment needs to finalize its efforts in three areas: fight against corruption, reforming the judiciary and building an energy strategy.
