Israel and Palestinians Receive "Road Map" Peace Plan

A U.S. diplomatic source says a copy of the so-called "road map" for Middle East peace has been delivered to newly appointed Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas. Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon received his copy a couple of hours earlier. The road map, which was drawn up by the United States, the United Nations, the European Union and Russia, is aimed at ending Middle East violence and creating a Palestinian state by 2005. Its release came hours after a new Palestinian cabinet led by Prime Minister Abbas was sworn in. Abbas earlier strongly condemned a suicide bombing early Wednesday, presumably by a Palestinian, which killed three people in Tel Aviv, and he promised a crackdown on Palestinian violence.
