Over 100 messages commenting the US attack were written by people traveling in the Sofia underground. The letters were provoked by five displays of Metromedia, a company that advertises in the Sofia underground, the PR agency Lestra announced. Metromedia urged the citizens to answer the questions Who? and Why? immediately after the terrorist assaults in New York and Washington. Two glass boxes were put in one of the central underground stations for comments and answers to the questions. The messages from the boxes were given to the American Embassy in Bulgaria on September 20. Most messages were written quickly on a slip of paper, a used ticket or torn pages from phone books. There are also envelopes with long messages, handwritten or typed, in Bulgarian, English or Russian. A Bulgarian called Georgi Uzunov composed a 132-line poem. A woman wrote an essay signing it with `Ms Lilova`. Konstantin Simonov wrote a short poem in Russian called `About the murders and the murderers`. There are many references to the Bible and the writings of Nostradamus in that letter. Most people express sympathy and compassion but they are strongly divided in their views on what the American response should be. Opinions vary from `Attack them! ` to `There should never be new strikes and wars!`. As for the Bulgarian position on the issue, the people`s views vary from`everybody against terror` to `Bulgaria shouldn`t take sides`. Some say that `the American military policy is the real culprit for the death of the thousands of innocent Americans`.
