Bus Blast Kills Six in Grozny

World | April 3, 2003, Thursday // 00:00

At least six people have been killed by an explosion, which tore through a passenger bus in Grozny, capital of the Russian republic of Chechnya. Many more people are reported to have been injured. A Russian official says the blast may have been caused by a landmine hidden at the side of the road. The bus was carrying local construction workers returning from the Russian military headquarters based in the outskirts of Grozny. Chechen rebels frequently target Russian forces with landmines, and civilian vehicles are also sometimes hit. The republic has enjoyed relative calm since a controversial constitutional referendum two weeks ago.
