Dozens Missing in Bolivia Landslide

Up to 50 people are missing and feared dead in northern Bolivia, after a mudslide crushed dozens of houses. Heavy rains are reported to have started the disaster, which has engulfed a gold mining community in the village of Chima. Several bodies have been recovered. Those injured have been taken to hospital in the town of Tipuani, about 100 km (60 miles) away. There were earlier reports of up to 700 people missing - but La Paz province security chief Oscar Nina said that these had been "exaggerated". About 150 homes are believed to have been buried, out of a total of around 1,200. And officials have not confirmed claims that there have been four fatalities. Local mining official Jose Plata told local radio it was hard to estimate the number of victims as everything had been submerged by the landslide.
