Maltese PM Calls Snap Election

World | March 10, 2003, Monday // 00:00

A general election is to be held in Malta next month, the prime minister has announced. The announcement came only two days after the people of Malta voted in a referendum to join the European Union. Prime Minister Eddie Fenech-Adami is thought to be seeking a new mandate to prove the strength of the Yes vote, which the governing Nationalist Party had lobbied for. "I took this decision in the best interest of the country to end the uncertainty," he told a news conference. He could have called the election any time between now and next January. The opposition Labour Party, which is against EU membership, has questioned the validity of the result, arguing that less than half of all eligible voters said Yes.
