Israel Targeted Gaza Refugee Camp

World | March 6, 2003, Thursday // 00:00

Israeli troops, backed by tanks and helicopters, advanced into a refugee camp in the Gaza Strip overnight, in an operation that is reported to have left at least 11 Palestinians dead and scores injured. Palestinians accused Israelis of firing into a crowd of civilians but the Israeli army said a device planted by Palestinian militants near an armoured personnel carrier caused at least some of the deaths. The raid came a day after a powerful bomb blast ripped through a bus in the northern Israeli city of Haifa, killing at least 15 people and wounding another 40. Israeli police said it was caused by a Palestinian suicide bomber, who also died. Palestinians accused Israel of raiding Gaza in retaliation for the Haifa attack, but the government said the operation was part of its ongoing campaign against militants.
