Pope Calls on World to Avoid Gulf Conflict

World | March 5, 2003, Wednesday // 00:00

Pope John Paul II has called on world leaders to assume their responsibility and make every effort to spare humanity "a dramatic conflict" in Iraq. The head of the Catholic Church made the appeal during his weekly general audience. He said: "I've called for Ash Wednesday to be a day of prayer and fasting for peace." Wednesday marks the start of the 40-day period of Lent, during which Roman Catholics are called to make some form of sacrifice, usually by giving up certain foods. The Vatican is stepping up efforts to prevent conflict in Iraq. Last month it sent a representative for talks with President Saddam Hussein.
