UN Accuses Former Timor Army Chief

The United Nations has charged Indonesia's former military chief with crimes against humanity over his role in the bloody violence during East Timor's 1999 vote for independence. However, Indonesian ministers said they would refuse to hand over former defence minister General Wiranto for trial. UN prosecutors in East Timor announced they had indicted General Wiranto along with six senior military officers and a civilian official - for murder, deportation and persecution of independence supporters during the vote. Around 1,000 people died in violence in East Timor when the territory voted overwhelmingly for independence from Jakarta in August 1999. Most of the dead were pro-independence supporters.
