Bulgaria: Mexico City Earthquake: Houses Evacuated as 5.7 Quake Rocks Mexican Capital

The quake hit 5.6 miles (9km) north-west of Huajuapan de Leon, a city in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, with aftershocks felt in Mexico City.

It had a depth of 34 miles (55 kilometres), according to the US Geological Survey.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or major damage following the quake, which struck at 8:31am local time (2:31pm UK time).

The quake triggered the capital's seismic alarm and saw some residents fleeing from their homes and offices.

In the Roma neighbourhood located in central Mexico City, some locals stood outside barefoot or in pyjamas waiting to return inside their homes.

Elena Tenorio, standing in the street near her car, shortly after police directed her and motorists to stop, told Reuters of her fear it was a large-scal earthquake.

She said: "You just don't know how intense it's going to be and that makes you feel uncertain and afraid."

Social media users reported feeling buildings shake, with some saying they had to be evacuated from their homes and workplaces.
