Bulgaria: Conference on Long-term Sustainability and Innovation Infrastructures to Industry and Society

The Bulgarian Presidency flagship conference ‘Improving long-term sustainability and opening up research and innovation infrastructures to industry and society’ will be held in Sofia on 22 and 23 March 2018.

The conference will explore and discuss a concrete set of actions to foster sustainability and impact of European research infrastructures on industry and society. It is expected to adopt a European call for action on the long-term sustainability of research infrastructures (RIs) to provide an impetus for the full realisation of the potential of the European Research Area and thereby further boost broad-based research and innovation. The call for action will foster the long-term competitiveness and excellence of the RIs in Europe and worldwide.

The conference will provide a platform for discussion and dialogue between policy, research and industry stakeholders on the future of the policies regarding RIs and their contribution to research excellence, innovation, growth and jobs. The event will in particular contribute to the debate on how to foster the inclusiveness of the European Research Area by spreading excellence across the region and opening up to industry and society, thus reducing the innovation divide in Europe. Its further aim is to increase visibility and promote partnership between RIs, business and academia for an efficient implementation of innovation and business models, fostering open data sharing and multi-actor involvement. Finally, the conference will explore ways to take full advantage of the educational and training potential of RIs for the Skills Agenda, in particular regarding the next generation of researchers and innovators.

The subject of the conference is in line with the discussions on the European Commission's proposal on the next Multiannual Financial Framework and the 9th Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, as well as exploring the opportunities for promoting public-private partnerships in order to provide opportunities for the sustainable development of research infrastructures in Europe.

The conference will be opened by the Minister of Education and Science, Krasimir Valchev, and will feature a video greeting from the Commissioner for Science and Innovation, Carlos Moedas. European research policy leaders, heads of research infrastructures consortia, state secretaries and ministers responsible for science, research and innovation in EU countries, representatives of the European Commission, members of the European Parliament and coordinators of some of the largest European projects in the field of research infrastructures have been invited to participate as lecturers, moderators and panel discussants.

The event is part of the calendar of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and is implemented under a project funded by the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation "Horizon 2020".
