UN officials in Geneva today are on strike against cutting their salaries, BNT reports. Some 9500 people work at the UN in Geneva, and it is still unclear how many of them will be involved in the strike action, but the strike will break the work of the institution. The session of the UN Human Rights Council was canceled.
In February, the salaries of UN officials in Geneva were cut by 3.5 percent and in June a new pay cut of 5 percent is foreseen. It is believed that UN officials are one of the most well paid officials in the world, but salary cuts will affect workers in Geneva because of high living standards, trade unionists explain.
