China will set up a huge protected park for big pandas that will be three times larger than the Yellowstone National Park in the United States to provide communication and optimal opportunities for breeding the wild populations of black and white bamboo bears known for their sluggish reproduction , state media reported.
At least 10 billion yuan ($ 1.6 billion) has been secured for the next 5 years for the National Park of the Great Pandas in a Mountainous Region of Southwestern China, China Daily News reported.
Plans for the park, which will cover 27,134 square kilometers, were announced early last year by the ruling Communist Party and the State Council, the Chinese government.
The Yellowstone Park, established in 1872, is the first national park in the United States and covers 8,983 square kilometers.
Plans for the Chinese Park aim to collect in a region all wild pandas that are currently isolated in several different parts of the country - in the provinces of Sichuan, Shuny and Gansu. Over 80% of the giant pandas in the world live in Sichuan and the rest are in Shuny and Gansu.
The funds for the new Panda Park are provided thanks to an agreement between China Bank and the Sichuan Forestry Authority. The Bank will secure funding by 2023 to alleviate poverty among people in remote areas and build the necessary infrastructure and other sites for the park.
