Solana Stresses UN Role on Iraq

World | January 29, 2003, Wednesday // 00:00

European foreign policy chief Javier Solana has insisted that the UN Security Council must be the centre of efforts to prevent what he called the "catastrophe" of war in Iraq. "The centre of gravity should continue to be the Security Council," he said. Mr Solana also welcomed US President George W Bush's offer to share intelligence with the UN on Iraq's suspected weapons of mass destruction. His comments came as Russia continued to advocate a peaceful solution to the crisis amid continuing European divisions. "We have to do everything possible to avoid a war," said Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov. Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was travelling to London to meet UK Prime Minister Tony Blair on his way to Washington and Moscow to discuss the Iraq crisis. There are serious differences among European countries over the implications of the report made by chief weapons inspector Hans Blix to the UN Security Council on Monday.
