Over 120 Bulgarian research teams have shown interest in applying for funding under Sixth Framework Program of the European Union. Bulgarian scholars are cooperating actively with EU partners in the fields of astronomy, oceanology and nano technology. The first scientific-activity-grants open for competition under the Sixth Program were announced in Bulgaria in mid-December. The five-year budget of the European program amounts to some EUR 17 B. For the first time, the EU member states and the aspirants have an equal access to the program. The criteria for assessment of candidate projects include possible benefits not only for the European Union but for the host country as well. The applicants' vision for further international scientific co-operation will be also considered. The largest share of the framework program's budget is reserved for integration projects. In Bulgaria, the assessment of the candidate projects will take some three months following the date of the application.
