A Turkish Airlines commercial passenger plane carrying 71 passengers and five crew has crashed in Turkey. The RJ-100 jet was travelling from Istanbul to the south eastern city of Diyarbakir when it reportedly crashed in a military area near the airport. There was no immediate information on the number of casualties. Turkish media said that at least four people had survived and had been taken to local hospitals where they were said to be in shock but not with life threatening injuries. Some local news reports said that weather conditions were cold and foggy at the time. Last week several flights to Diyarbakir were cancelled due to poor runway conditions. Diyarbakir, close to the border of Syria and Iraq, is a major Turkish military area and has a considerable Kurdish population.
