Incumbent Tipped to Win Lithuanian Vote

Current head of state Valdas Adamkus is widely predicted to win today's second round run-off vote for the presidency of Lithuania. The 76-year-old's popularity rests on his succesful negotiations for EU and NATO membership. A former exile who spent 50 years living in the US, Adamkus used a recent visit by President Bush to boost his image as an international statesman appealing to centre-right voters. Predicted to run a close second is Rolandas Paksas, a right-winger and former prime minister who has campaigned on a law and order ticket. But analysts say the 46-year-old has failed to capture the imagination of Lithuanian voters in an election where no single issue has dominated.
