Bulgaria: 40 Turkish Military Request Asylum in Germany BGNES

At least 40 Turkish officers have requested asylum in Germany.

The military officers presented their requests immediately after the first wave of purges in Turkey after the coup attempt in July 2016, but German authorities are refraining from a decision. The reason for this is the upcoming visit of German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Ankara next week.

Merkel is concerned that a possible positive decision will threaten the agreement on refugees which the EU signed with Turkey.

During the week, Turkey threatened to cancel the readmission agreement with Greece after the Greek Supreme Court refused to extradite 8 military officers who sought asylum in Greece after the coup attempt in Turkey.
