Bulgaria: Timmermans: Monitoring Does Not Obstruct Bulgaria’s EU Presidency BGNES

The continuation of monitoring of the judicial system in Bulgaria is not in the way of its rotating presidency of the Council of the EU as of January 1, 2018, commented to journalists the Vice President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans.

“There is no contradiction at all between these two elements. Because the mechanism is not a penal system but rather a system for cooperation among member-states. Nothing will happen after January 1 next year – we will simply continue working with Bulgaria in order to achieve our aims.”

Timmermas refused to set a deadline for the termination of monitoring but expressed his confidence that the 17 recommendations for reforms made in the monitoring report published on Wednesday can be fulfilled within the next two, two and a half years.

“I wouldn’t have written these recommendations if I did not believe that these can be fulfilled before the end of the mandate of this Commission.”
