Police registered more than 8000 offenses in just a week, half of them committed in the presence of an officer, the Interior Ministry says.

The statistics come as harsher penalties for violators came into effect on Saturday, January 21.

Over the course of last week, 270 people were stopped while driving without having a license, while 159 others were driving under alcohol influence.

As many as 81 traffic incidents occurred in the same period, leaving five people dead and 104 injured.
