Bulgaria: Five Parties Have Chance to Enter Bulgaria's Parliament - Poll

Five parties would make it to Parliament in the early election this spring, a poll based on attitudes in mid-January shows.

The parties jumping above the 4% threshold include conservative GERB, socialist BSP, liberal, ethnic Turk-dominated DPS, the recently forged nationalist alliance United Patriots, and Volya, the new party of Varna-based businessman Veselin Mareshki.

GERB, the senior partner in the outgoing coalition government, has an edge of less than three percent over the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and is set to be again the biggest in Bulgaria's Parliament, according to the poll conducted by Trend agency.

GERB's support is projected at 32.2%, while that for BSP is 29.3%, respectively.

Next come the United Patriots, who will muster 10.4% of the vote, according to the projection.

The Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), seen as a kingmaker in a number of Bulgarian Parliaments over the past 20 years, is expected to garner just 7.8%, half its current result.

Mareshki's party Volya ("Will") gets 5.9%, according to the poll.

The right-wing political space, which includes the Reformist Bloc, DSB and potentially Yes, Bulgaria, will not be represented in the legislature as the organizations get 3.7%, 1.2%, and 0.7% respectively.

The Reformist Bloc, of which DSB was part until recently, was the junior coalition partner in the outgoing cabinet.

Support for ABV party of President (2002-2012) Georgi Parvanov has also melted to 1%, down from more than 4% in the 2014 election.

Some 4.1% of respondents have said they will vote for another party, while 3.7% will tick the option to support none of the parties that was used for the first time in the presidential election.

Trend's estimates suggests the new President, Rumen Radev, enjoys the biggest approval among respondents, followed by outgoing Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, socialist leader Korneliya Ninova, nationalist politician Krasimir Karakachanov, President (2012-2017) Rosen Plevneliev, and Veselin Mareshki.

Respondents have also highlighted jobs (37%), the fight against corruption (35%) and measures for economic development (30%) as main priorities the next government should deal with.

Policies barring "refugees" (the word is used in the poll) from entering Bulgaria are welcomed by 25% of respondents.
