The Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) leadership has met Russian Ambassador to Sofia Anatoliy Makarov, party officials say.

It is "high time" for Bulgaria to have a "responsible and balance attitude and policy both westward and eastward," Kaloyan Pargov, the head of BSP's structure in Sofia, has told the Bulgarian National Radio.

"The fact that we are members of the EU and NATO does not revoke the search for fulfillment of national interests in third countries and with Russia in particular," he has added.

The BSP will insist on revoking EU sanctions on Russia as they "harm good relations", Dnevnik.bg quotes him as saying.

Pargov has also argued ways should be sought to boost contacts of all EU member states with Russia in light of the current security environment.

As the EU's only Slavic and Orthodox member state, Bulgaria can play a key role, he is reported as saying.
