Bulgaria's outgoing Prime Minister Boyko Borisov hypothesized the European Union should consider lifting sanctions on Russia if the United states revokes the measure under Donald Trump.
Speaking after the last European Council in Brussels on Thursday, he explained he had demanded that the EU hold "consultations" with Trump before extending sanctions imposed on Russia over the Ukraine crisis.
EU leaders on Thursday agreed to extend the restrictive measures on the country's defense, energy and financial sectors that will be formalized early next week.
But Borisov told the Bulgarian National Radio he had warned counterparts the West needed to act "in unison".
"I warned the situation will turn very unpleasant for Europe if when the new American President comes, we [are not on the same page] about keeping the sanctions. I insisted, if possible, to have this consultation before hand so that Europe does not remain [alone] with confirmed sanctions," he has told the BNR's Brussels correspondent.
"If they are togeter, it will be better, in my opinion, otherwise there should be no sanctions at all."
Borisov argued that if the US revokes the restrictions it may fill in the niche left on the Russia market after European goods stopped arriving there.
In that case, "this market will not exist for us anymore."
His comments come months after Bulgarian President-elect Rumen Radev said he would insist for sanctions to be lifted it he became the head of state, arguing they harmed the Bulgarian market and drawing accusations home and abroad of being "pro-Russian."
