Bulgaria: BSP Accuses Outgoing Cabinet of Deal with Poland in Exchange for UN Post for Georgieva BGNES

BSP has accused the leader of GERB and outgoing Prime Minister Boyko Borisov of yet another national betrayal because of decisions related to the UN.

The claim is that the government withdrew Bulgaria’s nomination for non-permanent member of the Security Council as a result of a deal with Poland. In exchange, outgoing European Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva would be appointed as head of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), asserted BSP, citing international sources.

“Our nomination for non-permanent member of the UN’s Security Council was made in 2003 and Bulgaria had great chances of winning this position in the UN for 2018 and 2019. The withdrawal happened as a result of a deal on support for Kristalina Georgieva in exchange for a retreat from this position,” stated BSP’s leader Korneliya Ninova in Parliament on Wednesday.

Outgoing Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov appeared in Parliament in order to explain to journalists the position of the outgoing cabinet on this issue. Earlier, Mitov described on BNR a different scheme – the candidate for UN head Irina Bokova made the deal with Poland in exchange for support for her own nomination.
