Authorities have declared a state of emergency in the northeastern Bulgarian village of Hitrino, national media report.

"There is a genuine disaster in the village," Interior Ministry Chief Secretary Georgi Kostov has said.

"From today's point of view, the decision on [Saturday] for Hitrino to be [fully] evacuated is a right one."

As special teams are struggling to clear up the site where a cistern exploded on Saturday killing seven people and wounding twenty-nine, the Interior Ministry has warned gas is steaming out of some of the other tanks that derailed.

Residents have been repeatedly warned against nearing the affected area that has been sealed off.

The key priority for the crisis team operating on the site is now to provide safety for the people working under risky conditions to drain the propylene and liquefied petroleum gas out of the cisterns.
