Daniel Mitov Ready for Foreign Minister Role Amid Geopolitical Test in Bulgaria
Daniel Mitov, Deputy Chairman of GERB, has expressed his readiness to assume the position of Acting Foreign Minister
A "hardline" lawkamer with Bulgaria's biggest party has admitted the possibility of conservatives and socialists joining hands "in a certain moment" to form the country's next government.
"Joint governance between GERB [the party of outgoing PM Borisov] and the BSP [the socialist opposition] is not a good solution for the state, but one shouldn't rule out that such a move will be made in a certain moment," Metodi Andreev, a GERB member of Parliament, has told Focus Radio's Plovdiv branch.
Andreev has been exceptionally outspoken in condemning parts of the BSP and its establishment for ties to the predecessor, the "Bulgarian Communist Party", and has often advocated against cooperation between the two biggest parties.
GERB's leader Borisov has more than once indicated he now sees socialists as his "arch-enemy", having even stepped down as Prime Minister after the BSP-backed candidate won the presidential election last Sunday.
The decision would lie with the Bulgarian politicians, Andreev has added.
But he has also admitted the popular revolt against GERB, which led to socialist-backed Rumen Radev's election, was caused by the fact that "people lost hope and the feeling that public resources can be distributed fairly in Bulgaria."
The immense amount of EU funding pouring into Bulgaria and the public money set aside for infrastructure projects went into the hands of a small circle of "oligarchic corporate companies," he has added.
"There were achievemtns in the judicial system, but people weren't conviced it was the maximum that would give incentives to a modern, genuine and just system."
So far neither the BSP nor GERB are willing to seek a new government within this parliament, with an early election expected this spring.
