Bulgaria: Turkey’s Erdogan: 3 Million Migrants May Head to Europe BGNES

Turkish President Recep Erdogan has stated that it is possible for 3 million migrants to head to Europe and accused the European Union of the lack of financial support while his country is spending billions on them.

“At the moment, Turkey has 3 million Syrian refugees, they can go to Europe, they can even go on foot. And while we take care of these 3 million, the EU is obliged to help us. If these refugees head for Europe, what is Europe going to do? It will get confused. Now, it does not want to admit 100 or 500 people. We were promised aid of EUR 3 B in June and a second tranche to the same amount. None of this has been fulfilled,” underlined Erdogan in an interview for Al Jazeera.

Erdogan said that, so far, financial assistance from the EU for refugees in Turkey does not amount to more than EUR 250-300 M and to USD 500 M from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. At the same time, the government, non-governmental organisations and municipalities in Turkey have spent nearly USD 27 B, the state’s contribution being USD 13 M.

Erdogan criticised harshly the USA for not handing over the Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen, a demand made by the Turkish authorities since Gulen has been accused of organising the coup attempt on July 15.
