Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Donchev has said he insisted on Sunday evening that the cabinet step down after results of the presidential elections were announced.

Donchev has told NOVA TV that his boss, Boyko Borisov, should have kept his own promise and deposited his resignation as the candidate nominated by his GERB party finished with the second-best result.

Earlier, Borisov had asserted he would step down if Parliament Speaker Tsetska Tsacheva lost the election.

But after Tsacheva came second to socialist-backed Rumen Radev, Borisov said he would only quit if she loses the runoff on November 13, arguing GERB had emerged as the "strongest political party," with Radev being officially nominated not by the BSP, but by an initiative committee.

In Donchev's words, GERB-appointed ministers in the cabinet were divided over whether the government should fall, with Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov insisting it should stay as "the budget is going well".

Goranov later said it would an easy step to resign, citing the positive economic data of the past decade and the need to avoid pressure on the economy.
