French police have started the evacuation of thousands of migrants from an illegal camp in the northeast part of Paris.

The number of migrants increased drastically after the authorities closed down The Jungle near Calais last week, reported Reuters.

The transfer of migrants started early on Friday morning. People are being transported by buses from the improvised camp whose inhabitants have risen to 3,000 in the last few days.

A spokesperson of the Prefecture of Paris pointed out that migrants, who come mainly from war-torn countries like Afghanistan and Sudan, will be placed temporarily in detention centres in and around Paris until their asylum applications are processed.

About 600 policemen have been sent to the location.
