Turkey is not interested in the “red line” on the freedom of the press set by Europe, stated on Tuesday Turkish Prime Minister Binali Y?ld?r?m, cited by Reuters.
Y?ld?r?m pointed out this fact after the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz criticised harshly the detention of leading representatives and journalists of the opposition newspaper Cumhuriyet daily journal, including the paper’s editor-in-chief, reported bTV.
The detainees were arrested on suspicions of supporting the movement of the Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen which has been blamed for the coup attempt on July 15, as well as for having links with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
“We do not have a problem with the freedom of the press. This is an issue that we cannot reach an agreement on with our European friends. They always pose the question about the freedom of the press in our measures against terrorism,” added the PM.
