Bulgaria: Walloon Government Blocks CETA BGNES

The Walloon government rejected late on Thursday night the final compromise offer of the European Commission for changes in the trade agreement between the European Union and Canada which was supposed to satisfy Walloon demands.

The southern region of Belgium blocked the agreement for the creation of a free-trade zone between Europe and Canada. Belgium may not sign without Walloon approval, while the EU may not sign without the approval of Belgium.

Walloon premier Paul Magnette stated that progress has been made, especially regarding agriculture, but it is not sufficient in order to lift the embargo on the signing of the agreement due on October 27.
