Bulgaria: Bulgaria President Backs CETA Deal with Canada

Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev has expressed hope that the EU should "unite" around the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).

On Twitter, Plevneliev has said the deal is a chance "to show that Europe is able to take sagacious solutions in the interest of the unity of the Euro-Atlantic community."

He has argued that CETA may set an example of "fair and just rules of free trade" amid unpredictability that arose after the Brexit referendum.

Plevneliev's comments on the agreement, which sparks controversy in Bulgaria and around the EU, comes after Sofia tied its support for CETA to the establishment of a visa-free regime with Canada.

This position has already been shared by the Romanian government.
