A draft resolution that would determine Bulgaria's stance on the EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) has made it to Parliament's floor.
The Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), the biggest opposition force, has already said it would not back it as Bulgaria's economy will be "killed" by "huge quotas of milk, meat [and] various goods," according to leader Korneliya Ninova.
Trade unions in Bulgaria have also warned the deal would pose risks to Bulgarian businesses, favouring only big Canadian corporations whose produce would sweep many smaller businesses in Bulgaria out of the market, they say.
But the government sees it as an opportunity to have visas for Canada revoked for Bulgarian nationals.
Earlier this week, Bulgaria and Romania indicated they had reservations about CETA, insisting the visa waiver agreement has to become official in written form before approving the trade agreement.
CETA enjoys mixed reception across Europe, with environmentalists and unions warning of its detrimental impact on local economies and the possible allowance of products containing GMOs into the continent.
