Bulgarian PM Boyko Borisov has received a letter from the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker informing him about the results of the work of the Commission on ensuring the livelihood and the creation of normal living conditions for refugees in Turkey.
These activities are financed under the Facility for Refugees in Turkey created with EUR 2 B from the budgets of member-states and EUR 1 B form the EU budget.
“The amount of funds granted under the Facility is currently over EUR 2.2 B and EUR 1.2 B have already been allocated via concrete contracts. Out of the amount granted, EUR 467 M have been transferred to the partners- executives. The remainder will be transferred gradually in the course of implementation of the projects. It is crucial that the financial funds under the Facility (including those form your budget) change visibly and in reality the lives of over 3 million refugees admitted in Turkey,” pointed out Juncker.
At the end of September, the Network for social protection under emergency conditions was introduced. The EC, the Turkish government and the Turkish Red Crescent are cooperating in this initiative.
According to Juncker, this is not only the largest programme for humanitarian aid in the history of the EU but one of the most innovative programmes of this type. Under the programme and via EUR 348 M from the Facility, one million of the most vulnerable refugees in Turkey receive a debit card to which money will be transferred every month. The funds will help them cover basic living expenses like food and accommodation, and send their children to school.
