Bulgaria: Luxembourg's PM Bettel: Close All EU Borders for 24 Hours BGNES

Luxembourg’s PM Xavier Bettel has called on all member-states of the EU to close their borders for 24 hours. This will give skeptical Europeans a shocking lesson on how valuable free movement of people in the EU is.

At a press conference in Paris, he stated that the UK’s decision to leave the EU has been the wake-up call for many leaders in the EU. Governments should review what works in the EU and what does not, added Bettel.

“The closing of the borders will demonstrate to people what it is like to wait for 2 hours in order to enter Italy or Spain, to have border controls everywhere, to have all kinds of exchange blocked. One day. So people can understand what it is like to be outside Europe. What I am saying is terrible but it would be good for people to understand this,” added Bettel, cited by Bloomberg.

Regarding signals from London that the government will negotiate during Brexit to keep some of the privileges of being part of the Common Market but reject some of the main requirements for participation, PM Bettel called for steady resistance.

“Before they entered, they traded all kinds of possible concessions, now they want to exit with several exceptions. This is not Facebook where there is Status ‘Complicated’.

According to him, if the British are allowed to do this, there will be more referendums in Europe requesting the same status for other member-states.
