Unmanned trains will go down Sofia's third subway line, a the head of the metro company has said.
"The trains themselves have a driverless options. Additionally, the stations of the third line, in view of bigger safety of passengers, will have glass partitions between passengers and platforms that will be 1.5 meters tall," Stoyan Bratoev, CEO of Metropoliten AD, is quoted by Darik Radio as saying.
There have been several cases of people falling or jumping onto the tracks since the subway was launched in 1998.
The third line will link Sofia's southwest with its northeast and is expected to be up and running by 2019, Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova has said.
Construction has disrupted traffic across the capital and has resulted in a number of key boulevards being closed down.
Gotse Delchev Blvd, which has been particularly affected, is to be opened to traffic by the end of the year, Fandakova has added.
