NATO officials have refrained from commenting on a statement by Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, who on Sunday said the country might end its military presence in Afghanistan.
"Bulgaria is a valuable ally with important contribution to common security," the Bulgarian National Radio quotes NATO's headquarters as saying.
"Bulgaria contributes with significant participation of Bulgarian troops to the mission of NATO in Afghanistan, which trains provides counsel, and aids Afghan security forces," a NATO representative told BNR.
Borisov's proposal coincides with a EU-UN-Afghanistan meeting where, the Prime Minister suggests, a readmission agreement between EU member states and the war-ravaged nation should be secured to curb the inflow of migrants.
A government request to have the troops withdrawn is yet to be tabled to Parliament.
