The Vice President of the European Commission Kristalina Georgieva will be on unpaid leave for one month and her functions will be taken over by Commissioner G?nther Oettinger in October.
This is the decision of the President of the Commission Jean-Claude Juncker after the Bulgarian government nominated Georgieva for UN Secretary General.
“In this period, Kristalina Georgieva and the European Commission will guarantee in a fully transparent way the strict separation between the activities related to her nomination and her work as a member of the Commission,” said the spokesperson of the EC.
In their first reactions from Brussels deputies from the leading EPP, the Group of the Party of European Socialists and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats applauded Georgieva’s nomination.
“Mrs. Georgieva was very active both in Eastern Europe and in the European Union as a whole. She receives a lot of support for her work during this mandate. Soon, we will have an official position of the group but we want to see her at this post in the UN,” said EPP member Jozsef Szajer.
“Bulgaria and all of Europe can be proud of her. We wish her, from the bottom of our hearts, to become general secretary of over 7 billion people on this planet,” stated Socialist deputy Jo Leinen.
