MEP Angel Dzhambazki has said the nationalist VMRO party will staunchly oppose the idea to resettle some of the migrants who have been given refugee status to areas facing demographic problems.

Dzhambazki, who is the deputy chair of VMRO, has said his party is "categorically against... the construction of camps in municipalities and so on."

"Even a single public procurement they announce [will make] us go there and protest so we don't allow for this to happen," he has said.

Dzhambazki has slammed the idea of "resettling illegal emigrants [sic!] on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria and attempts at their integration is irrational and stupid... for a very simple reason," the Bulgarian National Radio quotes him as saying.

"The reason is that integration is a two-way process. One cannot be made to do something they don't want to do."

Contrary to Dzhambazki's claims, the proposal tabled over the weekend does not envisage the building of new "camps", but a commitment from municipalities to find accommodation and work for refugees.
