Bulgaria and the United States have signed an agreement that will allow the exchange of dactyloscopic (fingerprints) data and DNA profiles in an effort to boost cooperation in fighting crime, the Bulgarian Interior Ministry has said.

Under the document, an equal and reciprocal exchange of information needed for the prevention and investigation of serious crime cases will be secured between law enforcement institutions of the two countries.

Special importance should be attached to the document in light of the need to prevent the movement of people linked to terrorism activity.

Potential terrorists and threats to national security could be identified more easily thanks to the new cooperation mechanism, alongside people involved in activity such as trafficking and smuggling in goods and people, forging of travel documents, etc, the ministry has added.

The agreement was signed by Bulgarian Interior Minister Rumyana Bachvarova and US Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson. Negotiations on the exchange were competed during Bachvarova's visit to the United States in July.

In September, she is part of the Bulgarian delegation accompanying President Plevneliev during the 71th session of the United Nations General Assembly, alongside Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov.

The development is also considered a step forward in the visa regime talks between Bulgaria and the US.
