Bulgarian MEP Andrey Kovatchev has reiterated that Sofia and Bucharest will refuse to sign a the free-trade deal between EU and Canada unless an indication is given about the removal of Canadian visa requirements for the two respective countries.

Canada is to send the signal soon, Kovatchev has told the Bulgarian National Radio.

"We have direct negotiations with Canada, of course with support from European institutions," he has said.

Earlier this year, Canada said it could not remove visa requirements for Bulgaria and Canada - the only two member states for which the restriction is still being enforced, prompting Bulgaria and Romania to threaten they would block the deal with the EU.

This week, however, Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev said he had agreed with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that a roadmap for visa liberalization would have to be prepared in Sofia to pave the way for the step.
