Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orb?n said on Wednesday Hungary "would be even glad to back" EU Commission Vice President Kristalina Georgieva for the post of UN Secretary General.
At a briefing with Bulgarian counterpart Boyko Borisov in southeastern Bulgaria, not far from the Turkish border, Orb?n made clear it was "up to Bulgaria" whether or not to raise her candidacy.
The question posed to Orb?n was whether he would support her candidacy.
He thus stopped short of commenting on reports that emerged over the weekend about Hungary, Latvia and Croatia pondering a joint nomination of Georgieva with the support of Germany.
"Bulgaria has many female citizens who are respected across the world and are quite talented. Whom Bulgaria will nominate is for the country to decide."
Bulgaria raised the candidacy of UNESCO head Irina Bokova back in February, but amid her lacklustre performance in the straw polls at the UN Security Council, reports suggested Bulgaria mulled options to nominate Georgieva instead.
On Tuesday, Borisov assured Bokova would remain Bulgaria's candidate, but set a "deadline" until September 26, when the next straw poll with be, for her to improve her standing.
Borisov suggested she should rank among the two candidates with the best results, but did not elaborate whether the government would put Georgieva or someone else in Bokova's place if she failed.
