The head of the EU Commission President's cabinet has issued an ambiguous statement assessting a possible candidacy of the commission Vice President Georgieva for the UN top job.
Martin Selmayr has tweeted that, while it "would be a great loss" for the Commission if Georgieva took over, she "would make a strong UNSG [UN Secretary General" and would make "many Europeans proud", also sending "a strong signal for gender equality."
Selmayr says in his profile that all views are his own.
But his words follow reports that Georgieva might become a late entry into the UNSG race, with either several Eastern European countries raising her candidacy or Bulgaria nominating her instead.
Bulgaria currently supports Irina Bokova, the UNESCO Director General, whom it nominated in February.
Government officials are yet to comment on the reports.
