Bulgaria’s State Agency for Refugees has received 9,388 applications for protection in the first seven months of 2016, close to the 2014 total of 11,081 and nearly half of last year’s total of 20,391.

Bulgaria granted refugee status of 357 persons in 2016 through July 31, according to the latest data available from the refugee agency.

This compared with 4,708 decisions to grant refugee status issued in all of 2015 and 5,162 in 2014.

The agency denied registration as refugees to 384 foreign nationals this year through end-July. This compared with 623 refusals in 2015.

Almost half of the foreign nationals who sought protection in Bulgaria in the first seven months of the year were from Afghanistan 4,442. Iraq and Syria followed with 2,832 and 1,120, respectively.
