Shocker: Bulgaria Drops from UK Tourists' Cheapest Summer Spots List
In an unexpected turn, Bulgaria and Turkey have been notably absent from the list of the ten cheapest European summer destinations for British tourists
Hundreds of motorbikers have taken to the streets of numerous Bulgarian cities to protest over the developments in the death of a couple in an road incident with a Turkish national.
Faruk Bektas, who was on his way from Germany to Turkey, hit a couple of motorbikers in the end of July. A court placed him under house arrest, but he averted justice and was unavailable at the address declared for his detention within days after the ruling.
Since then, bikers have demonstrated in Sofia in front of the Sofia Court House and the Turkish Embassy, blaming the flawed judicial process and alleging Turkish diplomats here were involved in his disappearance, something the latter deny.
On Wednesday, rallies were held in front of buildings of judicial institutions in the capital, but also in Varna, Burgas, Shumen, Plovdiv, Sliven, Veliko Tarnovo, and Yambol.
The biggest protest was in Burgas, a Black Sea port city, where up to several hundred gathered according to various media outlets.
"The protest is not only against the judiciary, but against all institutions that fail to act. In the case of the Turkish national [Bektas], it is not only the court to blame. Yes, the judge herself maybe is, but also those who failed to retain him under house arrest," the Bulgarian National Radio quotes one of the demonstrators as saying.
Bikers are also calling for tough measures against people involved in deadly road incidents.
Earlier this week, Bulgaria sent a request for legal assistance to Turkey and issued a European Arrest warrant for Bektas.
