In a testament to enduring friendship, this year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and China
Bulgaria’s Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov has held meetings at the State Department and the Department of Defense in the concluding part of his working visit to the United States.
Daniel Mitov and Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken discussed cooperation in defense, the modernization of the Bulgarian armed forces and the outcome of the recent NATO summit in Warsaw, according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry in Sofia released on Saturday.
The two diplomats also focused on the progress achieved in the implementation of key energy projects in southeastern Europe and stressed on the importance of accelerating the construction of a gas link between Bulgaria and Greece and a LNG terminal near the Greek Aegean port of Alexandroupolis.
“The American side highlighted its commitment to continued U.S. support for the security on the eastern flank of NATO and implementation of key energy diversification projects,” the statement says.
Daniel Mitov and Antony Blinken also discussed the challenges arising from the imbalance of forces in the Black Sea and the conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa”.
Since the takeover of the Crimean peninsulaby Russia in early 2014, the security situation in the Black Sea region has changed, with a build-up of Russian military capabilities in the area. At the Warsaw summit NATO upgraded the Black Sea to an area of ‘strategic importance’ for the alliance and gave member governments until a meeting of defense ministers in the autumn to propose measures for the strengthening of security in the region.
Daniel Mitov and U.S. Acting Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Brian McKeon focused on the results of the NATO summit in Warsaw, the implementation of the Action Plan to improve the readiness of the Alliance as well as the U.S. initiative to strengthen the security of Europe as well as opportunities to boost security in the Black Sea region under the aegis of NATO, according to the statement.
The two sides also discussed security risks arising from the zones of instability in Europe and the Middle East as well as ways to deepen cooperation in defense and progress in the modernization of the Bulgarian armed forces.
